Re-envisioning the fiber landscape with Jared Flood

March 1, 2018

Sometimes we forget that those behind some of the biggest names and companies in the industry are just that; people with a vision, makers with a mission and entrepreneurs with a passion and will so strong. Jared Flood is the force behind one of our favorite companies, Brooklyn Tweed. What started out as an idea, quickly grew into something much greater than even he anticipated. Backed by an incredible team and american wool, he’s paved much of the way for modern domestic yarn production and quality knitwear design. It was a pleasure to get to sit down and hear his story, and I hope you enjoy listening in. You can find Jared at brooklyntweed.com and on Instagram @brooklyntweed and @jared_flood

My husband chose a Jared Flood cardigan for me to knit. It was a learning experience and I loved every minute of it.

Thank you for the podcast. I like to work with natural fibers. Brooklyn Tweed is beautiful. Love colors and different weights. Great to hear story from Jared Flood.

It’s so great that the “locally made” movement is not limited to food. Jill Draper produces some of my favorite American made wool, but I haven’t had the pleasure of trying Brooklyn tweed outside of their patterns yet.

Ooh I’d love to try Brooklyn Tweed as I’ve heard so many great things about this company. Thank you!

I’ve been dreaming of some Brooklyn Tweed yarn. Have not yet tried it. Thanks for the opportunity!

I always go to Brooklyn Tweed when looking for sweater pattens. My first sweater I knit for myself was the Wake Pullover, and now I am knitting Auster and when I finish that, I have already purchased Rift by Jared Flood and it will be next… I am looking forward to listening to this interview when I go on my run later. Love Brooklyn Tweed! Thanks Ashley

I remember Jared Flood from his early days in NYC , before Brooklyn Tweed. His progress appeared so seemless. It is good to be reminded that no one’s journey is without struggle and forks in the road. Very glad for his success.

Love Brooklyn Tweed! Scrumptious yarn and great patterns – wonderful giveaway!

I have followed Jared since he began blogging. I remember when Brooklyn Tweed became not just an idea, but something tactile, warm and beautiful. I have a drawer full of the BT patterns and a box or two of the yarns. Also, a few projects on the needles. I can’t relay in words how much I admire him. Keep on keeping on.

I’ve really come to expect stunning designs from Brooklyn Tweed, and I’m never disappointed. I’m currently knitting one BT project and have another in the queue. The yarn is also divine.

It was so nice to put a voice to the face! I love Jared’s hats and blanket patterns the most. Someday, I’ll be adventurous and knit one of his sweaters.

Hi Jared. You won’t remember me. I was the party who left a comment on your blog, probably about the time you were finishing the MBA. I told you that I wished you lived nextdoor to me. I’m the worst kind of fan, I know. I gush. But I was and am a fan of your work, starting with Cobblestone, on through Made in Brooklyn and into Umaro over and over again (what a fine blanket). Your value for hard work inspires me. I am a lazy person by nature. I hope I can emulate some of your work ethic. Please keep designing. And how cool that you’re a friend of Pam Allen. I loved Interweave when she was the editor. Oh, and if you’re ever inspired to move to Oahu, the house next door to me could come up for sale.

What a marvelous story. I especially liked the idea that naïveté has served Jared Flood well (‘almost always’ as he said). Preconceptions can squelch ideas/creation without our ever becoming conscious of it happening. Seredipity + a serious amount of work = beautiful yarns and patterns AND a company I feel proud to support.

I’ve loved Making magazine and am enjoying the new podcast just as much. Thx for all the inspiration you offer!

The BT yarns and patterns are wonderful. Great podcast.

  • Reply Kimsy_G March 5, 2018 at 8:37 pm

I appreciate the authenticity of Jared’s story, especially his testament to being mindful and accepting of even those challenges we do t graciously welcome as the gifts they become. Also helped me to understand my own experience in NY that I couldn’t quite articulate. Thank you to all involved with his episode.

I love these podcasts and can’t speak highly enough of Brooklyn Tweed. I have a beautiful scarf in my projects to do and since it’s finally Autumn down under and the weather is getting cooler – I can’t wait to start.

It was great hearing the story of how Brooklyn Tweed came to be.

  • Reply Skye Fraser March 8, 2018 at 4:26 pm

I’ve listened to this podcast for so long and love it in its newest reincarnation. Was so good to learn more about Jarrad Flood and Brooklyn Tweed, and how they’ve come into being.

  • Reply Karen March 11, 2018 at 11:27 am

Creative, maker, designer, entrepreneur- not an easy combo to balance. (Yes, I do speak from experience.) Thanks, Jared, for sharing part of your journey.

Have a few UFOs that I want to get off my needles but a Brooklyn Tweed project is definitely on the “to do” list.

  • Reply Debra Sewell March 15, 2018 at 11:25 am

I made a couple of Jarod’s Seeds Hats, easy start to Fair Isle knitting! There are many more patterns I want to knit, love Jarod’s cool style. Brooklyn Tweed yarns are yummy! Thank you for chatting, Jarod! : )

I would be really interested to hear more about how he works with designers, and how that developed and became part of the Brooklyn Tweed story. Another episode?
