Fiber folk: Nearly two years ago I received an email from Tanis Lavallee. It began as a conversation, which then spurred a new journey for her and her husband Chris’s seasoned hand dyed yarn business, Tanis Fiber Arts. It’s been inspiring to watch from afar and hear more about the leaps of faith these two have taken in their business over the years, as a husband and wife team, parents and entrepreneurs – so much hard work and dedication. I hope as you get to know Tanis today that you’ll be motivated to pursue your dreams, take those leaps of faith and inspired to stick with it for the long haul. You can find Tanis at tanisfiberarts.com and on Instagram @tanisfiberarts

  • Reply teegan October 9, 2016 at 10:22 am

Just sitting down to listen, and I had a thought. I know(!) it’s more work, but is there any way to have a sort of map or guide that groups those you interview regionally? That way, if we’re going to Maine or the Pacific Northwest or NYC, we can do some “guided listening” beforehand? I’m tempted to do it myself, but I’m not super programming-savy…

  • Reply amy bernhardt October 10, 2016 at 6:50 am

First I have to say I’m so happy Podbean recommended your podcast … I really enjoy your interviews!!

This was a great interview, I had no idea superwash was so bad for the environment … makes me rethink what I buy (which is good with Rhinebeck coming up). This is my first into to Tanis and her company … and I couldn’t wait to stop driving so I could see ‘Lucky Penny’ … and WOW!!! I do have to say, if I were to win, that would be my color of choice.

Thank you again for the work you put into such a quality podcast.

I knit so many hats, leg warmers and other baby gifts and often use super wash to make life a little easier for young mothers. So good to learn about an alternative – I had no idea of the plastic/yarn usage! Your podcasts always inspire me and I generally learn something new.

  • Reply Vicki Lynch October 10, 2016 at 8:04 am

I enjoyed hearing the story of Tanis Fiber. I remember the episode 2 years ago about superwash products and how I felt like I should give away all my superwash. I didn’t which is good. It does have a place when you’re knitting for non-knitters. However, it’s good to know about the option that Tanis now offers. I love the Tartan fingering you have shown on the blogpost.

  • Reply Minnie October 10, 2016 at 7:48 pm

I love this story. TFA took such a careful, thoughtful, deliberate approach to being more conscience of their impact on the environment. They took a measured approach and obtained real success. I like it. It’s good food for thought. I like the lesson.

  • Reply Bernice October 10, 2016 at 7:59 pm

Very interested in the discussion about superwash yarn and the fact that there is an alternative. I did grow up and start knitting in the time before superwash, so I learned to wash woollens carefully. I think knitters should understand that it is not difficult or even particularly time consuming. However, an alternative Eco friendly process is a bonus choice for knitters who want to make environmentally friendly choices.

  • Reply Yukimom October 11, 2016 at 8:01 am

I was so pleased to listen to the Tanis podcast as I’ve been a big fan from a long time ago. It was interesting to hear how the business evolved, and good for you for taking things step by step. The first time I used Tanis yarn was for a knit a long at my LYS, the Purple Purl. I chose the Stormy colourway and made a February Lady sweater which is still worn and always receives compliments. I had never knit with yarn with such lovely rich and textural colours. Since then, I have used Tanis yarn many times, and now wait to see the new colours at Espace Tricot when I visit my sister in Montreal. Thank you for your wonderful products, and would love to be able to try the new PureWash yarns.

  • Reply Tiffany W October 11, 2016 at 8:02 am

I am very impressed with Tanis’s conviction to find another option to super wash yarns. Like Tanis, I began questioning my yarn choices after learning more about the super wash process. It has been a struggle to find hand dyed yarns that are not super wash. Thank you Tanis for giving knitters this gentler option! Your drive, creativity, and passion are inspiring.

  • Reply Sharon Vance October 11, 2016 at 8:16 am

I love the colors of the Tanis yarn! I loved hearing about how the couple works together for the business in the podcasts, too. Excellent episode.

  • Reply Dominique October 12, 2016 at 12:21 pm

I loved this podcast – everything from talking about how Tanis started her business to the superwash discussion. I loved when she emphasized how it was a risk at the time for her to leave her day job to do this, but she loved it and wanted to nurture it to grow, so she took that step and hoped for the best; I’m definitely in a place where I couldn’t just drop my day job for the work I truly love, but to hear about someone else who was in the same sort of financial bind as I am now who was able to do that is incredibly inspiring. And, of course, I love your talk about personal convictions and what we can do on a small scale for ourselves in our lives. Great podcast, as always, and I’m excited for my next payday so I can try out some of Tanis’s new yarn!

  • Reply Alyssa October 12, 2016 at 12:29 pm

Tanis fiberarts was the very first hand dyed yarn I ever knit with all those years ago… I’m so obsessed with yarn now, and I work at a yarn shop, so it’s hard to remember that at one point this was all brand new to me, but yeah, it all started with some Tanis. Beautiful stuff, great interview. Thanks again Ashley! I’m so glad you keep putting out these podcasts. they’re perfect for tea and knitting 🙂

Interesting podcast! I searched forever to find the perfect colour of red to make a blanket for my daughter when I found Tanis Fibre Arts. The yarn colour is so amazing that I love knitting with it (which is a good thing since I’ll be knitting forever!) I must now go back and read the blog post about superwash and go and check out the new PureWash line. (I bought the aran in red .. there wasn’t a purewash choice yet!)

Very inspiring! Long-time TFA fan. Absolutely no one does colours like Tanis and Chris. They produce yarn where the most subtle nuance can be surprisingly vibrant and the tiniest detail can be incredibly significant. Very talented duo! Clearly a great deal of loving effort goes into their work. And kudos for caring enough to introduce the new PureWash yarn. So proud to see fellow Canadians succeed! 🙂

I so enjoyed this! I’ve never really been into podcasts, mostly because I didn’t have a convenient way to listen. But I wanted to give this a shot because I’ve been a fan of Tanis’ blog for a little while. So lovely to hear about the operation and how it aligns with regular life. I have got to get some of their yarn…

  • Reply Jessie October 13, 2016 at 8:43 pm

Being a beginner, in a sense, to the knitting world, I’m slowly making my way through different styles of knitting. But one thing especially, when I was starting out, I didn’t think about how the yarn was processed. And as I have become older I have become more aware of how many of my day to day items are being processed. I mean pay attention to what I’m putting into my body or my dogs, but I never really thought about yarn, until I heard the podcast, TFA’s blog post back in June and the Woolful Fiber-Conscious blog/article. After I listened and read all of the information, I was truly inspired that TFA is trying to make a difference, without sacrificing quality. I love the Purewash and very excited to see what TFA does next!

Life’s been crazy busy, and I’ve “been away” from listening to your podcast for a while. I’m so delighted to hear about what Tanis Fiber Arts is up to! I was at Stitches West last February, and I tired to buy local and not super wash. I did leave with some super wash, but I also have some prized yarns that are not super wash, and I asked for non-super wash options while there. As a consumer I am interested to see what the dyers will innovate once there is a stronger market for non-super wash, and I want to communicate that interest to them. So excited to support this avenue.
